Description

INTRODUCTION Demographers have studied the inverse relationship between mortality and socioeconomic status of population (1). Higher mortality is associated with lower socioeconomic status in both developing and developed countries. These secondary analyses have usually been done on aggregate data collected from fairly large studies. The relationship between poverty and demographic variables has been discussed in a recent book (2). Linkages between poverty and mortality under the broad framework of "sustainable development" are now the focus of international studies (3-5). Amartya Sen, in his keynote address at the seminar of International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) in 1995 in Florence, France, showed "mortality as an indicator of economic success and failure." The UNDP 1997 Human Development Report noted three broad perspectives in poverty studies: income perspective, basic needs perspective, and capabilities perspective (5).
